Dr. Roger S. Alber

Senior Minister

Dr. Alber is our Senior Minister at First Baptist. Under his leadership, our church has transitioned from an "old Downtown Church" to a vibrant, mission-centered House of Worship. Prior to coming to Massillon, Dr. Alber was Minister of Youth at First Baptist Church of Albans, West Virginia — Associate Pastor at First Baptist Church of Akron — and Senior Minister at Calvary Baptist Church of Indianapolis. Dr. Alber received his Bachelor of Social Work from Valparaiso University, his Master of Divinity and Doctorate of Ministry from Northern Baptist Theological Seminary. Roger and his wife Cindy were married in 1986. They have three children — Sarah, Maggie and Jacob. Sarah is a graduate of The Ohio State University and is presently attending “Youth With a Mission” in Thailand, and attends Ashland Theological Seminary. Maggie is an Art Therapy Major at Capital University, and Jacob attends The Ohio State University where he is majoring Arabic, German, and Russian. Roger enjoys both singing and playing trumpet and French horn. When he's not at the church, he also enjoys hitting the little white ball into the woods instead of the fairway. He enjoys all styles of music from Classical to Classic Rock and everything in between. His favorite songs are “In the Garden, “Life Song”, and “Hosanna”. He loves listening to Michael W. Smith, Chris Tomlin, Paul Baloche, Mercy Me, and Casting Crowns. Roger has several life verses which he refers to for resource: 20 For where two or three are gathered in my name, I am there among them." Matthew 18:20 (NRSV) 18 And Jesus came and said to them, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age." Matthew 28:18-20 (NRSV) 37 Jesus answered him, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.' 38 This is the greatest and most important commandment. 39 The second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as you love yourself.' Matthew 22:37-39 (GW) 1 … Now, this is what the Lord says: Do not be afraid, because I have reclaimed you. I have called you by name; you are mine. 2 When you go through the sea, I am with you. When you go through rivers, they will not sweep you away. When you walk through fire, you will not be burned, and the flames will not harm you. Isaiah 43:1-2 (GW) 31 Yet, the strength of those who wait with hope in the Lord will be renewed. They will soar on wings like eagles. They will run and won't become weary. They will walk and won't grow tired. Isaiah 40:31 (GW) Roger’s purpose is to lead people into a deeper relationship with God so they can discover how God created them to do the work of Christ here on earth. He is passionate about teaching and preaching the Word practically so it impacts our lives to live the way Jesus calls us to in this chaotic world. His focus is to lead the staff and the people of First Baptist so they reach and transform people though Jesus Christ.
